ADL Condemns Onalaska ISD Superintendent’s Facebook Post and Recommends Apology

  • September 18, 2018

Houston, TX, September 18, 2018…ADL today condemned a reported racist Facebook post by Lynn Redden, superintendent of the Onalaska Independent School District, criticizing Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.  Redden’s post said, “When you need precision decision making, you can’t count on a Black quarterback.”

“The Facebook post by Onalaska Superintendent Lynn Redden is racist, abhorrent, repugnant, and grossly inconsistent with the values the Onalaska superintendent, or any superintendent, should be modeling for his students and community,” said Dayan Gross, ADL Southwest Regional Director.

After reports of his post became public, Superintendent Redden explained he thought he was responding to a private message and deleted the post when he realized it was public.  Redden further stated that he didn’t intend for the post to come across as racist and claimed he was referring to the statistical success of Black NFL quarterbacks.

“It is troubling that Mr. Redden only regrets the post being public and has not apologized for it,” Gross added. “We hope Mr. Redden will apologize with a full understanding of how offensive his comment was, will be more mindful of his social media posts in the future and will consider using his voice and position to help challenge hate and bigotry and promote respect for all.”
