The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is happy that Houston City Council voted 10-6 to join the lawsuits filed by the City of El Cenizo, El Paso County and the cities of San Antonio and Austin challenging the constitutionality of Senate Bill 4 (SB 4). ADL was one of several organizations that urged Houston City Council members to vote to join the lawsuits challenging SB 4.
“We are delighted that Houston, the largest city in Texas, has decided not to sit idly by as other Texas cities pursue these challenges,” said Dayan Gross, , ADL Southwest Regional Director. “As to SB 4, ADL believes there is a strong case to be made against its constitutionality. Based on today’s decision, we are hopeful that Houston’s participation in challenging SB 4 will help ensure it will be struck down on constitutional grounds,” said Gross.
The court has already consolidated the cases filed by El Paso County and the cities of San Antonio and Austin with El Cenizo and designated El Cenizo as the lead case. The City of El Cenizo filed a motion for preliminary injunction against the State of Texas to stop SB 4 from taking effect on September 1, 2017. A hearing on the preliminary injunction is currently scheduled for June 26, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. in San Antonio.
