The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is disappointed Houston voters rejected the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO).

ADL worked tirelessly to make this ordinance a reality, convening religious and civil rights organizations and individuals committed to justice and fair treatment for all to support the ordinance.   ADL also testified numerous times before Houston’s City Council in favor of the ordinance.

“For years,” said ADL Southwest  Associate Director Dena Marks, “Houston led the nation in diversity, but was the only major city in Texas that did not have an equal rights ordinance.  Houston City Council members understood the importance of such an ordinance and passed it, but Houston voters rejected the ordinance when it was put on the ballot.”

“While we believe most Houstonians generally appreciate diversity and see it as a strength, we are disappointed they didn’t vote that way,” Marks added. “We are hopeful Houston City Council members will work toward passing an anti-discrimination ordinance again, and that voters, if asked to support it, will do so.”
