ADL Concerned by Sudden Uptick in Apparent Hate Incidents

  • February 3, 2017

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is concerned about an uptick in hate-related incidents in the Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery County areas in the past week, and encourages residents to report such incidents to law enforcement and ADL.

“There has been a disturbing uptick in the number of apparent hate incidents since the Presidential election,” said ADL  Southwest Regional Director Dayan Gross.  “We are working hard to respond to these incidents, and we hope they are not part of a growing trend,” he added.

Among the reported incidents this week:

  • Swastikas on a sign and fence in Sienna Plantation
  • Racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim flyers in Fort Bend and Montgomery counties
  • Students at Cy Ranch High School giving Hitler salute
  • American Vanguard flyers at Rice University

“Clearly, ADL is still needed here. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen so many incidents so close together. We need to work together to maintain Houston’s track record as a city that handles its unparalleled diversity better than almost any other city in the world. ”

ADL has been working with law enforcement and educators to respond to the reported incidents mentioned above.  ADL offers resources and training, and has reached out to make those resources available to agencies, organizations, and individuals who want them.
