Texas Refugee Ban

  • January 24, 2020

On January 10, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Texas would be the first state in the country to officially refuse entry to refugees.  ADL Civil Rights Committee Vice Chair Martin Siegel and Jean and Jerry Moore Southwest Civil Rights Counsel Rachel Bresner immediately got to work writing an excellent Op-Ed for the Houston Chronicle, asking the Governor to reconsider his decision.

On January 15, a federal judge in the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Maryland issued a preliminary injunction blocking the executive order that allowed Gov. Greg Abbott to reject all new refugees to Texas.  So at the Chronicle’s request, Martin and Rachel revised the Op-Ed to reflect that development, and it was published in the January 17 Houston Chronicle.  Congratulations to Martin and Rachel for a job very well done!
